Why YOU Can Be a Mentor
When you think of the word “mentor,” what image comes to mind? Do you picture a seasoned executive in a suit offering polished career strategies? Or perhaps an expert craftsman passing down decades of mastery?
It is easy to believe that to be a mentor, you need to have it all figured out, possess decades of wisdom, or commit dozens of hours every week. But at Kinship Park Rapids, we see mentorship through a much simpler lens: being a mentor just means being a consistent, positive presence in a young person’s life. You don’t need to be extraordinary to make an extraordinary impact. You just need to show up.
Meet the Kids Waiting for a Friend Like You
Right here in our community, there are incredible young people waiting for a caring adult to step up and walk alongside them. These aren’t just names on a waitlist; they are creative, curious, and energetic kids who are eager to share their passions and build lasting friendships:
-
Ava (Age 8): A quiet, sweet, and creative girl who loves drawing, reading, and her outdoor cat. Ava is looking for a patient mentor to help her try new experiences—like bike riding, arts and crafts, and swimming—in a supportive environment.
-
Arlo (Age 10): Outgoing, friendly, and social, Arlo loves active, outdoor adventures. He would love a mentor to go fishing with, play sports, and share quality one-on-one time as he navigates changes like moving schools.
-
Krissy (Age 15): High-energy, empathetic, and creative, Krissy loves art, creative writing, and outdoorsy activities. She hopes to learn photography, play sports, and spend quality time chatting with a supportive adult companion.
-
Damian (Age 13): A thoughtful and mellow boy who excels in math, science, and hands-on projects. Damian loves video games, woodshop, and animals, and he’s looking for a trustworthy male role model to build woodworking projects with and share his passion for tech.
-
Payton (Age 11): Energetic and social, Payton thrives on staying active through sports like volleyball and basketball, as well as baking and puzzles. She wants a dedicated adult friend outside her family to explore local outings and share fun experiences.
-
Dayjah (Age 11): Bright and adventurous, Dayjah dreams of becoming a doctor and loves baking, road trips, and learning how cars work. She is looking for a fun female mentor to check out local spots, try new recipes, and relax over movies or books.
Every single one of these kids has unique goals, bright dreams, and hobbies they can’t wait to share. All they are missing is someone like you to share them with.
Flexibility First: No Rigid Time Requirements
One of the biggest hesitations potential mentors face is time. You might be wondering, “How can I fit this into my busy work or family schedule?”
Here is the truth: there is no rigid, strict requirement for meeting frequency.
We don’t expect you to overhaul your calendar or dedicate every weekend to mentoring. Whether you meet up once a week or a couple of times a month for an hour or two, the magic isn’t in the quantity of time—it’s in the consistency. Grabbing a pizza, helping with a craft project, or throwing a football around for an hour provides the reliable support these youth need to flourish.
