Mentor Description

Position: Kinship Mentor/Volunteer Mission of Kinship: to provide a preventive program for children by matching them with Kinship volunteers who provide adult friendship and a positive role model. Duties: • To initiate weekly contacts with child • To be consistent in meeting with and contacting the child with changes in planned meetings • To maintain ongoing periodic contact/consultation with the Kinship staff; sharing concerns, highlights and ideas. Qualities and Skills Required: • Care for the safety of children • Love for children • Time to spend with a child • Dependability and enthusiasm • Wide variety of interests • Nonjudgmental attitude • Transportation Time Required: Minimum six hours per month. Time will vary according to the contact/activity Time When Mentoring Is Done: After school hours or on weekends; negotiable with the child and his/her parent(s)/guardians Length of Commitment: One Year minimum Training Provided: Initial orientation, periodic training sessions, ongoing support and consultation with staff Supervisor: Directly responsible to the Kinship Director Benefits: • Experience the fulfillment of watching a child grow and mature and seeing a child develop assets and self-confidence • Be a friend and have a friend; by giving of yourself you receive • Experience the satisfaction of offering a child new opportunities • Become part of an ongoing experience by reaching out and personally shaping another life
