Long before he was the legendary architect of America’s financial system, Alexander Hamilton was a young, brilliant, but fiercely impetuous immigrant. He was eager to serve his adopted country during the Revolutionary War, but his reckless ambition could have easily derailed his future.

Recognizing Hamilton’s immense intellectual gifts, General George Washington selected the young man to serve as his aide-de-camp. Washington did not just give Hamilton tasks; he gave him guidance. In the high-stress crucible of the war, Washington served as a steady, patient father figure. He taught Hamilton how to channel his raw ambition into constructive leadership, navigate political complexities, and command authority.

Yet, Jefferson’s profound understanding of law and philosophy did not develop in a vacuum. It was shaped by his mentor, George Wythe.

A landmark national report, “The Mentoring Effect: Young People’s Perspectives on the Outcomes and Availability of Mentoring,” sheds light on just how transformative a caring adult can be. Published by Civic Enterprises in association with Hart Research Associates for MENTOR, this first-ever nationally representative survey of young people confirms what we see every day at Kinship of the Park Rapids Area: quality mentoring relationships have a profound, life-altering effect on a young person’s trajectory.

Unfortunately, the report also highlights a stark reality—one that we are actively working to change right here in our local community.

Understanding “The Mentoring Gap”

The research reveals a massive “mentoring gap” across the United States. Nationwide, one in three young people grow up without ever having an adult mentor of any kind, whether through a structured program or a naturally occurring relationship. That means roughly 16 million youth across the country reach age 19 without a mentor’s guidance, including 9 million youth deemed “at-risk” due to various life challenges.

The report notes a difficult paradox: the more risk factors a young person faces—such as poverty, housing instability, or behavioral hurdles at school—the less likely they are to find a naturally occurring mentor in their everyday lives.

Here in Park Rapids, our youth face these exact same challenges. When a child lacks a supportive adult outside the home, their potential is too often left to chance. At Kinship of the Park Rapids Area, our mission is to step into that gap and ensure that no child in our community has to navigate life’s hurdles alone.

• Higher Educational Goals: 76% of at-risk youth with a mentor aspired to enroll in and graduate from college, compared to just 56% of those without a mentor.

• College Enrollment: 45% of mentored at-risk youth enrolled in postsecondary education, compared to only 29% of their unmentored peers.

• Community Leadership: Mentored youth are more than twice as likely to hold a leadership position in a club, school council, or sports team (51% versus 22%).

• Civic Engagement: 48% of youth with mentors volunteer regularly in their communities, compared to 27% of those without.

Who is Waiting?

Here are just a few glimpses into the lives of the youth currently on our waiting list. Could you be the match they’ve been waiting for?

“Ben” – Age 10

Ben is a chill, social guy who is great at making friends at school, though a few of his close buddies are moving away soon. He is a big sports fan, loves playing soccer, and enjoys spending hours jumping on the trampoline. While his family is big into cars and loud hobbies, Ben prefers a quieter, more athletic vibe. He is looking for a mentor who shares his love for fishing and sports, and someone he can connect with one-on-one. It might take him a little time to open up, but he is incredibly ready to find a mentor to spend time with this summer.

“Lily” – Age 8

Lily is a quiet, imaginative girl who just wrapped up the second grade. She is quite shy around new people, but once she gets comfortable, her bright personality shines through. Lily is a big fan of drawing, reading books of all kinds, playing Roblox, and eating pizza. She also loves water activities and jumping on the trampoline. Lily comes from a very large, busy household and has been patiently waiting for a Kinship match for over a year and a half. She would benefit immensely from some dedicated, individual attention outside of her hectic home.

“Maya” – Age 15

If you love creativity and conversation, Maya might be your perfect match. She describes herself as a total chatterbox and is incredibly energetic and compassionate. Maya lives with her mom and loves art, creative writing, playing softball, and spending time outside. Maya has shown incredible resilience through some difficult family transitions over the past couple of years. She is currently doing well and working hard on her personal growth, but after a previous match closed a couple of years ago, she is so ready for a stable, consistent mentor to walk alongside her as she turns 16 this summer.

“Chloe” & “Harper” – Age 11

Chloe and Harper are close-knit step-sisters who share a ton of the same hobbies. They are both active in competitive dance, love playing basketball and volleyball, and enjoy quieter activities like baking and solving puzzles. These friendly, fun girls could easily start out by sharing a mentor together, or they could each benefit from having their own unique mentor to celebrate their individual identities. They’ve seen how much fun Kinship can be through extended family, and they are excited to experience it for themselves.

While all of those are wonderful parts of the mentoring journey, there is a deeper layer to building a truly transformative relationship with a young person. It comes down to communication—knowing how to listen, how to ask the right questions, and how to empower youth to discover their own potential.

Recently, several of our dedicated Kinship mentors took a powerful step forward in their mentoring journeys. They gathered for an intensive training session in Motivational Interviewing (MI) led by the fantastic Scott Nygaard of Legacy Group, LLC. It was an incredible, hands-on experience that went far beyond mere lecturing. Our mentors didn’t just learn about Motivational Interviewing; they stepped into the arena and actively practiced these life-changing communication skills.

The experience left us inspired, energized, and deeply convinced of just how valuable MI is for mentors, volunteers, and anyone looking to make a meaningful difference in the Park Rapids community.

What is Motivational Interviewing?

At its core, Motivational Interviewing is an evidence-based, collaborative conversational style. Instead of telling a young person what to do, giving unsolicited advice, or lecturing them on behavior changes, MI is designed to spark a person’s internal motivation. It utilizes specific, open-ended questioning, reflective listening, and affirmation to help individuals explore and resolve their own ambivalence about change.

In a mentoring context, this is absolute magic. When a youth is struggling with school, navigating peer pressure, or trying to make positive choices, a mentor trained in MI doesn’t swoop in to “fix” the problem. Instead, they guide the conversation in a way that allows the mentee to voice their own arguments for positive change. It honors the youth’s autonomy, builds their self-confidence, and strengthens the trust between mentor and mentee.

Learning a Skill is Like Learning a Language

One of our biggest takeaways from Scott Nygaard’s training was a profound truth about how we communicate: Motivational Interviewing is a skill that must be practiced. You wouldn’t expect to pick up a guitar for the first time and instantly play a flawless concerto. You wouldn’t expect to read a textbook on French and immediately speak it fluently on the streets of Paris. Communication is no different. It is a muscle.

Many of us have default patterns of talking. We want to solve problems quickly, so we jump straight into “fixing mode” or advice-giving. Shifting away from that instinct and moving toward a reflective, patient MI approach takes time, intentionality, and a lot of repetition. It requires practicing the art of the open-ended question, mastering the pause, and learning how to reflect back what a young person is feeling rather than just what they are saying.

Our mentors spent their training doing exactly that: practicing, making mistakes, adjusting, and trying again. And the beautiful thing about MI is that it isn’t just for formal mentoring sessions. We want to encourage everyone in our community to practice these empathetic communication skills in their daily lives—with your spouses, your children, your coworkers, and your neighbors. Imagine how much stronger our community would be if we all practiced the art of truly listening to understand, rather than just listening to reply.

Our annual Kinship Fish Fry was a resounding success, and as we look back on the evening, we are overwhelmed by the warmth and generosity of the Park Rapids area.

A Legacy of Support Since 1992

Since 1992, Kinship of the Park Rapids Area has been dedicated to a simple but profound mission: providing mentorship for youth in our community. We believe that every child deserves a supportive adult role model to guide them, listen to them, and simply be “there.”

Events like Friday’s Fish Fry are the lifeblood of this mission. They provide the necessary resources to keep our programs running, but they also serve as a beautiful reminder of the strength of our community when we come together for a common cause.

The Impact in Numbers

While totals are still being finalized, we are thrilled to share the preliminary results of the night:

• Funds Raised: Approximately $5,744 (and counting!)

• Guests Served: Roughly 240 community members enjoyed a meal with us.

• Volunteer Power: 35 dedicated individuals gave their time to make this happen.

A Heartfelt Thank You

An event of this scale doesn’t happen in a vacuum. It requires a village of supporters who are willing to roll up their sleeves.

We want to extend a massive thank you to Ben and the team at Lamb Weston/RDO Frozen for providing the delicious French fries. They were a hit, as always! We also owe a huge debt of gratitude to the Park Rapids American Legion. Not only did they provide the perfect space for us to gather, but they also gave a generous donation that directly impacts the local children in our program.

The Hands Behind the Hustle

To our Board Members: thank you for handling the “nitty gritty.” From the heavy lifting in the kitchen to the logistics that keep everything moving, your behind-the-scenes work is the foundation this organization is built upon.

Perhaps the most rewarding sight of the night was seeing our mentors and mentees working side-by-side. Our youth and their mentors did an amazing job bussing dishes and serving guests with smiles and enthusiasm. Watching these pairs interact reminds us exactly why mentorship matters—it builds confidence, teaches responsibility, and fosters a sense of belonging.

To our volunteers who cooked, cleaned, donated desserts, and took the time to connect with neighbors: you are the heartbeat of Kinship. Thank you.

Our Biggest Need: Will You Join Us?

While the Fish Fry is a wonderful celebration, the work of Kinship continues every day. As we look toward the future, our biggest need is for new mentors.

Currently, we have youth in our community waiting for a mentor—someone to share a hobby with, talk to, or simply spend a few hours with each month.

• No Pressure: We take things one day at a time.

• Support: We provide full orientation and training for all new applicants.

• The Right Fit: We strive to match mentors with mentees who share similar interests and experiences to ensure a natural, rewarding friendship.

If you aren’t able to mentor at this time, we are also seeking passionate individuals to serve as donors or board members.

Last Friday evening, the warm glow of Necce’s Restaurant wasn’t just coming from the overhead lights; it was radiating from the table where our mentors gathered for an appreciation dinner. As we sat around the table, sharing delicious food and even better conversation, it was a powerful reminder that while we may be a small nonprofit organization, we are a tight-knit community bound by a shared mission and a genuine care for one another.
