This Saturday, our nation marks a monumental milestone: America’s 250th birthday. Across the country, and right here in Park Rapids, the sky will fill with fireworks and the streets will echo with celebration as we reflect on the grand experiment of American democracy.

When we look back at the giants of American history—the generals who won our independence, the visionaries who drafted our founding documents, and the leaders who championed civil rights—we often view them as solitary heroes. We imagine they arrived on the stage of history with fully formed genius, ready to change the world alone.

But history tells a much deeper, more human story. The truth is that America’s greatest triumphs were forged through deep, intentional relationships. Behind almost every great American hero was a dedicated mentor—an older, wiser guide who recognized raw potential, invested their time, and fanned the sparks of talent into the brilliant flames of leadership.

As we celebrate this landmark Semiquincentennial, let’s look at three profound examples of mentorship that altered the course of American history, and explore how that same legacy remains alive today through Kinship Park Rapids.

1. The General and the Apprentice: George Washington & Alexander Hamilton

Long before he was the legendary architect of America’s financial system, Alexander Hamilton was a young, brilliant, but fiercely impetuous immigrant. He was eager to serve his adopted country during the Revolutionary War, but his reckless ambition could have easily derailed his future.

Recognizing Hamilton’s immense intellectual gifts, General George Washington selected the young man to serve as his aide-de-camp. Washington did not just give Hamilton tasks; he gave him guidance. In the high-stress crucible of the war, Washington served as a steady, patient father figure. He taught Hamilton how to channel his raw ambition into constructive leadership, navigate political complexities, and command authority.

Years later, President Washington appointed his former apprentice as the nation’s first Secretary of the Treasury. This historic partnership, built on a foundation of mentorship, bridged the gap between wartime survival and the establishment of a stable, thriving republic.

2. The Legal Giant Who Inspired a Visionary: George Wythe & Thomas Jefferson

Thomas Jefferson is immortalized as the primary author of the Declaration of Independence, the document defining our nation’s core creed: that all human beings are endowed with unalienable rights to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. Yet, Jefferson’s profound understanding of law and philosophy did not develop in a vacuum. It was shaped by his mentor, George Wythe.

Wythe was a prominent Virginia lawyer and scholar who would later become a fellow signer of the Declaration. When Jefferson was a young student, Wythe took him under his wing for five consecutive years of intensive legal study and personal mentorship.

Wythe did not just assign readings; he invited Jefferson into his daily life, engaging him in deep philosophical debates and demonstrating unwavering moral integrity. Wythe taught Jefferson how to think critically about the nature of liberty. The bond lasted a lifetime. Jefferson revered Wythe, famously referring to him as his “second father” and “my ancient master.” Without the intellectual grounding provided by George Wythe, the words that defined the American spirit might never have been written.

3. Fanning the Flame of Justice: Dr. Benjamin Mays & Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

To understand how the promise of America has evolved, we must look to the heroes who pushed the nation to live up to its founding ideals. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. is a monumental figure in the fight for equality, but his path toward becoming the voice of a movement was deeply influenced by a mentor named Dr. Benjamin Mays.

Dr. Mays was the president of Morehouse College, a brilliant theologian, and an outspoken critic of segregation. When a teenage Martin Luther King Jr. arrived at the college, he was uncertain about his future, hesitant to enter the ministry, and searching for his purpose.

Dr. Mays noticed the quiet brilliance in the young student. He took the time to engage with King, challenging him to see the ministry not as a passive sanctuary, but as a dynamic force for social justice. Throughout his life, Dr. King referred to Mays as his “intellectual father” and “spiritual mentor,” frequently seeking his counsel during the darkest days of the Civil Rights Movement. Dr. Mays poured his wisdom into a young man, and that young man went on to reshape the moral landscape of America.

Shaping the Next 250 Years in Park Rapids

The history of America is, at its core, a history of mentorship. It is proof that when one generation intentionally invests its time and encouragement into the next, the ripples can change the world.

You don’t have to be a George Washington or a George Wythe to make a monumental difference. You don’t need to be a military general or a college president to change the trajectory of a life. Right here in Park Rapids, there are local youth who are searching for their own voice, navigating their own challenges, and waiting for someone to believe in them.

By becoming a mentor with Kinship Park Rapids, you participate in this grand American tradition. When you spend a few hours a week fishing, working on a project, or simply talking and listening to a young person, you are helping to build the future of our community.

Celebrate With Us This Week!

As we look forward to the spectacular celebrations this weekend, we invite you to connect with the heartbeat of our local community in two very tangible ways:

Join the Community Celebration: Come out and celebrate America’s 250th birthday at the Park Rapids 4th of July Parade! It is a wonderful, vibrant tradition where neighbors gather, families smile, and our community spirit shines brightest. Keep an eye out for familiar Kinship faces, wave hello, and celebrate the incredible community we share.

Invest in a Future: Honor America’s legacy of mentorship by making a difference in a local child’s life. Consider signing up to become a Kinship mentor, or make a donation to help us match the youth on our waiting list with the supportive adults they need to thrive.

Happy 250th Birthday, America! Let’s keep the tradition of investment, mentorship, and community alive for generations to come. We will see you at the parade!

But there is another critical piece of the puzzle that often gets left to chance: the presence of a mentor.

A landmark national report, “The Mentoring Effect: Young People’s Perspectives on the Outcomes and Availability of Mentoring,” sheds light on just how transformative a caring adult can be. Published by Civic Enterprises in association with Hart Research Associates for MENTOR, this first-ever nationally representative survey of young people confirms what we see every day at Kinship of the Park Rapids Area: quality mentoring relationships have a profound, life-altering effect on a young person’s trajectory.

Unfortunately, the report also highlights a stark reality—one that we are actively working to change right here in our local community.

Understanding “The Mentoring Gap”

The research reveals a massive “mentoring gap” across the United States. Nationwide, one in three young people grow up without ever having an adult mentor of any kind, whether through a structured program or a naturally occurring relationship. That means roughly 16 million youth across the country reach age 19 without a mentor’s guidance, including 9 million youth deemed “at-risk” due to various life challenges.

The report notes a difficult paradox: the more risk factors a young person faces—such as poverty, housing instability, or behavioral hurdles at school—the less likely they are to find a naturally occurring mentor in their everyday lives.

Here in Park Rapids, our youth face these exact same challenges. When a child lacks a supportive adult outside the home, their potential is too often left to chance. At Kinship of the Park Rapids Area, our mission is to step into that gap and ensure that no child in our community has to navigate life’s hurdles alone.

The Proven Impact: Why Mentoring Works

The voices of the young people surveyed in the report offer undeniable proof that mentoring works. Mentees who had a structured or informal mentor reported significantly better outcomes across academic, social, and personal metrics compared to those who did not.

When we look at at-risk young adults, the numbers speak for themselves:

Higher Educational Goals: 76% of at-risk youth with a mentor aspired to enroll in and graduate from college, compared to just 56% of those without a mentor.

College Enrollment: 45% of mentored at-risk youth enrolled in postsecondary education, compared to only 29% of their unmentored peers.

Community Leadership: Mentored youth are more than twice as likely to hold a leadership position in a club, school council, or sports team (51% versus 22%).

Mentoring helps local kids build the self-esteem and resilience needed to become the future leaders, volunteers, and workforce of Park Rapids.

Longevity Matters: Commitment in Our Community

One of the most vital insights from The Mentoring Effect is that the length of the relationship matters. Young people in structured mentoring relationships reported a massive jump in helpfulness when the match lasted longer. In fact, youth satisfaction doubled when relationships lasted more than a year. Mentees in longer-term relationships also reported better outcomes in educational aspirations, sports participation, and community volunteering.

At Kinship, we don’t just look for quick fixes. We strive to build enduring, high-quality matches that provide Park Rapids youth with a safe, consistent anchor as they grow.

How You Can Move Park Rapids Forward

The report notes that investing in quality youth mentoring programs yields a minimum $3 return in benefits to society for every $1 invested. By supporting Kinship of the Park Rapids Area, you are directly investing in the social and economic fabric of our local community.

You don’t need a background in youth development to change a life.
We live in a community that genuinely shows up for one another. Whether it’s rallying behind a family in need, protecting our natural resources, or ensuring our youth and seniors are supported, Park Rapids operates like one big team. This interconnectedness doesn’t happen by accident. It is intentionally built every single day by an extraordinary network of local nonprofits, service clubs, and volunteers.

The Power of a Connected Community

It turns out that our “small-town feel” and strong support systems have measurable benefits. Sociologists use the term social capital to describe the economic and social value that comes from local networks and trust.

According to extensive data from organizations like the Stanford Center on Longevity and the National Civic League, communities with high numbers of active civic organizations and volunteer participation experience significant advantages:

Higher Resilience: Towns with tightly knit civic networks recover faster from local economic hardships or unexpected challenges.

Better Public Health: Regular community connection lowers rates of isolation and depression, particularly among youth and aging populations.

Enhanced Youth Outcomes: When young people grow up in an environment where they see adults actively volunteering, they achieve higher graduation rates and demonstrate greater emotional well-being.

In short, when we serve together, we don’t just fix individual problems—we strengthen the entire foundation of the place we love.

A Snapshot of the Changemakers in Our Backyard

We are incredibly fortunate to have a massive variety of organizations working behind the scenes to keep Park Rapids thriving. Every club and nonprofit brings a unique focus, but they all share the same ultimate goal: making our community a safer, healthier, and more vibrant place to live.

Youth Safety and Advocacy: Organizations like Hubbard in Prevention work tirelessly to keep our kids safe and healthy, while YESS (Youth Emergency Shelter & Support) provides a critical lifeline and safe spaces for local youth facing housing instability.

Preserving Care and Dignity: Living at Home helps our senior neighbors maintain their independence and stay safely in their own homes, while MAHUBE-OTWA delivers vital resources like energy assistance, housing support, and Head Start programs to families across the region.

Our Heritage and Environment: The All Veterans Memorial stands as a beautiful testament to our deep respect for those who served. Meanwhile, organizations like our local Lakes Association guard our waters, and the Itascatur Outdoor Activity Club maintains the trails that keep us healthy, active, and connected to nature.

Kinship: Building Connections, One Relationship at a Time

Right alongside these incredible agencies, we at Kinship of the Park Rapids Area are proud to do our part. Our mission is centered around one simple, powerful concept: mentorship. We connect adult mentors with local youth, creating supportive friendships that guide children through life’s ups and downs.

Just like a service club builds a park or an environmental group protects a lake, a Kinship mentor helps build a child’s confidence, resilience, and future. It is a deeply personal way to get involved in the Park Rapids web of support, and the ripple effects last a lifetime.

See the Connection in Action: The “Stronger Together” Project

If you want to witness the incredible spirit of Park Rapids firsthand—or if you have been looking for the perfect way to get involved but aren’t quite sure where to start—we have a date for your calendar.

On Saturday, August 15, the Park Rapids Lions are hosting the Stronger Together Project from 2:00 PM to 7:00 PM.

This special event is designed to bring our community’s diverse service organizations together under one roof. It is the perfect, low-pressure opportunity to walk around, meet the people behind the organizations listed above, and discover how you can contribute your unique talents to our community. Whether you have two hours a month or two days a week to give, there is a place where your time will make a massive difference.

We are a great community because we choose to look out for one another. Let’s keep that tradition alive. Come out on August 15, celebrate the incredible network that holds Park Rapids together, and find your own way to get involved. After all, we truly are stronger together!

Here in the Park Rapids area, Kinship is working hard to match local youth with mentors who can provide that extra layer of support and fun.

Right now, we have a growing waiting list of amazing kids who are ready to welcome a mentor into their lives.

A Note on Privacy: To protect the safety and privacy of the children in our program, all names in this article have been changed and generic photos are used. However, these are very real, wonderful kids living right here in our community who are waiting for a mentor.

Who is Waiting?

Here are just a few glimpses into the lives of the youth currently on our waiting list. Could you be the match they’ve been waiting for?

“Ben” – Age 10

Ben is a chill, social guy who is great at making friends at school, though a few of his close buddies are moving away soon. He is a big sports fan, loves playing soccer, and enjoys spending hours jumping on the trampoline. While his family is big into cars and loud hobbies, Ben prefers a quieter, more athletic vibe. He is looking for a mentor who shares his love for fishing and sports, and someone he can connect with one-on-one. It might take him a little time to open up, but he is incredibly ready to find a mentor to spend time with this summer.

“Lily” – Age 8

Lily is a quiet, imaginative girl who just wrapped up the second grade. She is quite shy around new people, but once she gets comfortable, her bright personality shines through. Lily is a big fan of drawing, reading books of all kinds, playing Roblox, and eating pizza. She also loves water activities and jumping on the trampoline. Lily comes from a very large, busy household and has been patiently waiting for a Kinship match for over a year and a half. She would benefit immensely from some dedicated, individual attention outside of her hectic home.

“Maya” – Age 15

If you love creativity and conversation, Maya might be your perfect match. She describes herself as a total chatterbox and is incredibly energetic and compassionate. Maya lives with her mom and loves art, creative writing, playing softball, and spending time outside. Maya has shown incredible resilience through some difficult family transitions over the past couple of years. She is currently doing well and working hard on her personal growth, but after a previous match closed a couple of years ago, she is so ready for a stable, consistent mentor to walk alongside her as she turns 16 this summer.

“Chloe” & “Harper” – Age 11

Chloe and Harper are close-knit step-sisters who share a ton of the same hobbies. They are both active in competitive dance, love playing basketball and volleyball, and enjoy quieter activities like baking and solving puzzles. These friendly, fun girls could easily start out by sharing a mentor together, or they could each benefit from having their own unique mentor to celebrate their individual identities. They’ve seen how much fun Kinship can be through extended family, and they are excited to experience it for themselves.

Photo by Anna Shvets: https://www.pexels.com/photo/happy-multiethnic-stylish-teenage-friends-with-skateboard-and-backpack-5325913/

The Need is Growing—And You Can Help

This is just a small snapshot. We receive new inquiries from families all the time, and our waiting list continues to grow. What we need more than anything right now are mentors.

Becoming a mentor isn’t about being perfect, and it doesn’t require a massive lifestyle change. It’s about introducing a youth to the simple, everyday things you already love to do—whether that’s fishing, baking, shooting hoops, or just grabbing a slice of pizza. It is incredibly easy to welcome one of these kids into your routine, but the positive, long-term impact on their life can last forever.

Ready to Learn More? Let’s Connect!

If you’re curious about how you can help but aren’t sure where to start, we have a couple of great, zero-pressure ways for you to get to know us:

1. Fill Out a Quick Application

When you think about the skills needed to be a great mentor, what comes to mind? Patience? A friendly smile? A willingness to shoot hoops, bake cookies, or help with homework?

While all of those are wonderful parts of the mentoring journey, there is a deeper layer to building a truly transformative relationship with a young person. It comes down to communication—knowing how to listen, how to ask the right questions, and how to empower youth to discover their own potential.

Recently, several of our dedicated Kinship mentors took a powerful step forward in their mentoring journeys. They gathered for an intensive training session in Motivational Interviewing (MI) led by the fantastic Scott Nygaard of Legacy Group, LLC. It was an incredible, hands-on experience that went far beyond mere lecturing. Our mentors didn’t just learn about Motivational Interviewing; they stepped into the arena and actively practiced these life-changing communication skills.

The experience left us inspired, energized, and deeply convinced of just how valuable MI is for mentors, volunteers, and anyone looking to make a meaningful difference in the Park Rapids community.

What is Motivational Interviewing?

At its core, Motivational Interviewing is an evidence-based, collaborative conversational style. Instead of telling a young person what to do, giving unsolicited advice, or lecturing them on behavior changes, MI is designed to spark a person’s internal motivation. It utilizes specific, open-ended questioning, reflective listening, and affirmation to help individuals explore and resolve their own ambivalence about change.

In a mentoring context, this is absolute magic. When a youth is struggling with school, navigating peer pressure, or trying to make positive choices, a mentor trained in MI doesn’t swoop in to “fix” the problem. Instead, they guide the conversation in a way that allows the mentee to voice their own arguments for positive change. It honors the youth’s autonomy, builds their self-confidence, and strengthens the trust between mentor and mentee.

Learning a Skill is Like Learning a Language

One of our biggest takeaways from Scott Nygaard’s training was a profound truth about how we communicate: Motivational Interviewing is a skill that must be practiced. You wouldn’t expect to pick up a guitar for the first time and instantly play a flawless concerto. You wouldn’t expect to read a textbook on French and immediately speak it fluently on the streets of Paris. Communication is no different. It is a muscle.

Many of us have default patterns of talking. We want to solve problems quickly, so we jump straight into “fixing mode” or advice-giving. Shifting away from that instinct and moving toward a reflective, patient MI approach takes time, intentionality, and a lot of repetition. It requires practicing the art of the open-ended question, mastering the pause, and learning how to reflect back what a young person is feeling rather than just what they are saying.

Our mentors spent their training doing exactly that: practicing, making mistakes, adjusting, and trying again. And the beautiful thing about MI is that it isn’t just for formal mentoring sessions. We want to encourage everyone in our community to practice these empathetic communication skills in their daily lives—with your spouses, your children, your coworkers, and your neighbors. Imagine how much stronger our community would be if we all practiced the art of truly listening to understand, rather than just listening to reply.

Dive into the Resources Yourself

Whether you are already volunteering, thinking about getting involved, or simply want to sharpen your own communication skills, there are fantastic tools available to help you.

We highly recommend checking out this amazing, free resource: MENTOR’s Motivational Interviewing for Mentors Toolkit. Developed in partnership with the Youth Empowerment in Schools and Systems (YESS) Lab at the University of South Carolina, this toolkit offers free online training modules, refresher videos, and brief guides designed specifically to help mentors master this conversational style on their own. It is an invaluable asset for anyone looking to foster deeper connections with youth.

You Are Supported Every Step of the Way

If you’ve ever thought about volunteering with youth but felt held back by a voice whispering, “What if I don’t know what to say?” or “What if I’m not equipped to handle their struggles?”—we want to reassure you.

At Kinship, you are never thrown into a mentoring relationship empty-handed. We believe that to be a successful mentor, you need a strong foundation. That’s why we are deeply committed to providing our volunteers with continuous, high-quality professional development, resources, and hands-on workshops like our recent session with Legacy Group, LLC.

The grills have cooled, the sunscreen is packed back into the beach bags, and the echo of boat motors on the lake is quiet—at least for the weekdays. Memorial Day weekend has officially come and gone, marking the unofficial, yet universally agreed-upon, kickoff to a Park Rapids summer.

Take a moment to think back to this past weekend. What did it look like for you and your family? Maybe it was the first pontoon ride of the year on Fish Hook Lake, watching the wakes ripple out under a perfect blue sky. Maybe it was a backyard barbecue with the smell of charcoal, the sound of kids laughing, and a competitive game of cornhole. Maybe it was just sitting on the deck, enjoying the long-awaited warmth with a cold drink.

Those moments feel like second nature to many of us. They are the very fabric of living in the Heartland Lakes area. But as you reflect on the start of your summer, ask yourself a quiet question:

Could you have invited another youth along for the ride?

The Power of an Extra Seat at the Picnic Table

Consider the reality right down the street. While many of us are loading up the cooler for an afternoon at the beach, there are kids living right here in the Park Rapids area spending their weekends inside, staring at screens, or walking the neighborhood sidewalks alone. Their parents might be working long holiday and weekend shifts to make ends meet, or perhaps resources are just too tight to afford a boat, a lake cabin, or even a quick trip out to Itasca State Park.

For you, adding one more person to your casual summer plans takes almost no extra effort. You’re already heading to the water. You’re already flipping burgers on the grill. Throwing one more hot dog on the fire or inflating one extra life jacket isn’t a hindrance to your weekend—but it could mean the world to a child who rarely gets to leave their front yard.

The Reality: There are dozens of youth right here in our community who are waiting for a mentor. They aren’t looking for extravagant vacations, expensive gifts, or curated, high-pressure outings. They are simply waiting for someone to share the ordinary, beautiful moments of a Minnesota summer with them.

Debunking the “Superhero” Myth

One of the biggest hurdles keeping people from stepping forward is the belief that they aren’t qualified. We tend to think mentors need to be perfect role models with endless patience, flawless backgrounds, and specialized skills.

But the kids on our waiting list don’t need a superhero. They just need a steady, caring adult who shows up.

When you bring a young person into your summer routine, you aren’t acting as a therapist or a parent; you are acting as a friend. You are showing a local child that they are seen, that they matter, and that they are a valued part of this community. The confidence a youth gains from simply being included—from realizing an adult wants to hang out with them—is something that stays with them long after the autumn leaves begin to fall.

What It Actually Looks Like

Mentoring through Kinship doesn’t mean rewriting your calendar. It means integrating a youth into the things you are already doing. If you are wondering how a mentor fits into a typical Park Rapids summer, it looks a lot like this:

An Hour at the Pier: Sitting on the edge of the dock, dropping a line in the water, and talking about whatever comes up.

A Trip for Ice Cream: Grabbing a cone downtown and walking through the park.

Backyard Projects: Fixing up a lawnmower, planting a garden, or washing the car—tasks that feel like chores to you, but feel like an adventure and a learning experience to a kid.

Community Events: Heading to a local baseball game, checking out a car show, or walking the trails at Itasca.

If you have time for these activities, you have time to be a mentor.

Take the First Step: No Strings Attached

We know that life is busy, and committing to something new can feel daunting. That’s why we want to invite you to take a pressure-free first step today.

Applying to become a Kinship mentor doesn’t mean you are signing a binding contract to give up all your free time. Instead, filling out an inquiry or an application is simply an opportunity to open a door. It’s a chance to:

Get to know our organization: Learn how we support our matches and provide resources every step of the way.

Understand our mission: Discover how intentional, casual mentoring strengthens the entire Park Rapids community.

Meet the kids: Learn about the incredible youth who are currently on our waiting list, hoping for a mentor just like you.

You have the opportunity to make this summer unforgettable—not just for yourself, but for a local child who is waiting for an invitation.

Mentoring can be especially meaningful in rural communities, where families may face longer travel distances, fewer nearby services, and fewer structured opportunities for youth. National research continues to reinforce the value of supportive adult relationships. A 2025 evidence summary of Big Brothers Big Sisters community-based mentoring found an approximately 13 percentage point reduction in violence-related delinquent behavior and recurring substance use at the four-year follow-up. Other mentoring initiatives have also shown stronger youth connections to caring adults. For communities like ours, that reinforces an important truth: when local people step up, young people gain relationships that strengthen confidence, stability, and long-term wellbeing.

Community, Connection, and Cod: Reflecting on the Kinship Fish Fry

This past Friday evening, the air around the Park Rapids American Legion was filled with the irresistible aroma of golden-brown fish and hot, crispy fries. But more importantly, the room was filled with something much more powerful: the spirit of a community that shows up for its youth.

Our annual Kinship Fish Fry was a resounding success, and as we look back on the evening, we are overwhelmed by the warmth and generosity of the Park Rapids area.

A Legacy of Support Since 1992

Since 1992, Kinship of the Park Rapids Area has been dedicated to a simple but profound mission: providing mentorship for youth in our community. We believe that every child deserves a supportive adult role model to guide them, listen to them, and simply be “there.”

Events like Friday’s Fish Fry are the lifeblood of this mission. They provide the necessary resources to keep our programs running, but they also serve as a beautiful reminder of the strength of our community when we come together for a common cause.

The Impact in Numbers

While totals are still being finalized, we are thrilled to share the preliminary results of the night:

Funds Raised: Approximately $5,744 (and counting!)

Guests Served: Roughly 240 community members enjoyed a meal with us.

Volunteer Power: 35 dedicated individuals gave their time to make this happen.

A Heartfelt Thank You

An event of this scale doesn’t happen in a vacuum. It requires a village of supporters who are willing to roll up their sleeves.

We want to extend a massive thank you to Ben and the team at Lamb Weston/RDO Frozen for providing the delicious French fries. They were a hit, as always! We also owe a huge debt of gratitude to the Park Rapids American Legion. Not only did they provide the perfect space for us to gather, but they also gave a generous donation that directly impacts the local children in our program.

The Hands Behind the Hustle

To our Board Members: thank you for handling the “nitty gritty.” From the heavy lifting in the kitchen to the logistics that keep everything moving, your behind-the-scenes work is the foundation this organization is built upon.

Perhaps the most rewarding sight of the night was seeing our mentors and mentees working side-by-side. Our youth and their mentors did an amazing job bussing dishes and serving guests with smiles and enthusiasm. Watching these pairs interact reminds us exactly why mentorship matters—it builds confidence, teaches responsibility, and fosters a sense of belonging.

To our volunteers who cooked, cleaned, donated desserts, and took the time to connect with neighbors: you are the heartbeat of Kinship. Thank you.

Our Biggest Need: Will You Join Us?

While the Fish Fry is a wonderful celebration, the work of Kinship continues every day. As we look toward the future, our biggest need is for new mentors.

Currently, we have youth in our community waiting for a mentor—someone to share a hobby with, talk to, or simply spend a few hours with each month.

No Pressure: We take things one day at a time.

Support: We provide full orientation and training for all new applicants.

The Right Fit: We strive to match mentors with mentees who share similar interests and experiences to ensure a natural, rewarding friendship.

If you aren’t able to mentor at this time, we are also seeking passionate individuals to serve as donors or board members.

Let’s Keep the Momentum Going

Park Rapids has supported the work of Kinship for over 30 years. When we come together at a long table over a shared meal, we aren’t just eating; we are reinforcing the safety net that supports our local youth.

Thank you for showing up, Park Rapids. Together, we are changing lives, one friendship at a time.

The Unexpected Gift: Why Mentoring is the Best Thing You’ll Do for Yourself

When we talk about mentorship at Kinship of the Park Rapids Area, the conversation usually starts with the kids. We talk about the 6-to-16-year-olds in our community who are looking for a steady presence, a listening ear, or someone to teach them how to cast a fishing line. And while the impact on a child’s life is profound, there is a “secret” about mentorship that often goes unspoken: the mentor often gains just as much as the mentee.

If you’ve been looking for a way to add more meaning to your week, build your professional skills, or simply reconnect with the heartbeat of Park Rapids, mentorship might be the missing piece. Here is why becoming a mentor is an investment in your own growth and happiness.

1. Staying Active and Connected

It is easy to fall into the “bubble” of our daily routines—work, home, repeat. Mentorship breaks that cycle. Whether it’s a hike through Itasca State Park, attending a local ball game, or grabbing a burger at a local diner, being a mentor keeps you physically and socially active.

By joining the Kinship family, you aren’t just hanging out with a young person; you are plugging back into the community. You become more aware of local events, school happenings, and the vibrant life of Park Rapids that exists outside your usual social circle. It’s a cure for stagnation and a way to feel truly “tethered” to the place you call home.

2. Building a Resume with Heart

For students, young professionals, or anyone looking to transition into a career in education, social work, or non-profit management, mentorship is a powerful differentiator. It provides tangible evidence of your leadership, patience, and communication skills.

Employers today aren’t just looking for technical skills; they are looking for emotional intelligence. Serving as a mentor shows that you can:

Navigate complex interpersonal dynamics.

Commit to a long-term goal.

Advocate for others.

Bridge the gap between different generations.

If you want a career working with youth, there is no substitute for the hands-on experience gained through Kinship. It transforms your resume from a list of tasks into a story of impact.

3. The Opportunity to Give Back

None of us got to where we are today entirely on our own. Think back to your own journey. Who was the coach who didn’t give up on you? The neighbor who taught you how to fix a bike? The teacher who saw potential in you when you were failing?

Mentorship is the most direct way to pay those debts of gratitude forward. By becoming a mentor, you are acknowledging the people who helped you by becoming that person for someone else. It is a powerful way to honor your own history by helping a young person in Park Rapids write theirs.

4. Living Out Your Values

We all have a list of things we claim to value: kindness, community, service, and leadership. However, as the saying goes, “Your values are not what you say, but what you do.” Mentorship is values in action. It’s one thing to say you care about the future of our youth; it’s another to spend two hours a week showing a child that they matter. When you align your calendar with your conscience, a profound sense of peace follows. You stop being a spectator in your community and start being a builder.

5. Expanding Your Worldview

One of the most underrated benefits of mentorship is the opportunity to interact with people from diverse backgrounds and life experiences. In our day-to-day lives, we often surround ourselves with people who think like us and live like us.

A mentee might come from a different socio-economic background, a different family structure, or have interests you’ve never explored. This connection challenges your assumptions and broadens your perspective. It reminds us that despite our differences, the human need for connection and belonging is universal. You’ll find yourself learning about new music, new challenges facing today’s youth, and new ways of seeing the world—all through the eyes of a young person.

Are You Ready to Grow?

At Kinship of the Park Rapids Area, we aren’t just looking for “perfect” people. We are looking for real people who are willing to show up and be themselves. The rewards of mentorship aren’t found in a paycheck, but in the ripple effect of a life well-lived and a community made stronger.

If you are ready to stay active, build your skills, and live out your values, we invite you to Get Involved Today.

More Than a Nonprofit: The Kinship Family in Park Rapids

They say it takes a village to raise a child, but at Kinship of the Park Rapids Area, we prefer to think of it as a family.

Last Friday evening, the warm glow of Necce’s Restaurant wasn’t just coming from the overhead lights; it was radiating from the table where our mentors gathered for an appreciation dinner. As we sat around the table, sharing delicious food and even better conversation, it was a powerful reminder that while we may be a small nonprofit organization, we are a tight-knit community bound by a shared mission and a genuine care for one another.

A Support System for Mentors

Mentoring is a deeply rewarding experience, but it also comes with its share of questions and challenges. That’s where the Kinship family comes in. Our mentors don’t just work in isolation; they are part of a supportive cohort that shares stories, memories, hopes, and dreams.

This sense of community is a cornerstone of successful mentoring programs. Research from MENTOR: The National Mentoring Partnership suggests that mentor support groups and peer-to-peer networking significantly increase mentor retention and satisfaction. When mentors feel they have a “tribe” to lean on, they are more confident in their roles and better equipped to navigate the ups and downs of their mentoring relationships.

Other Kinship affiliates across the country echo this sentiment. Kinship of Greater Minneapolis, for example, often highlights the “Kinship Community” as a vital part of their program, emphasizing that mentors are never alone in their journey. This peer support creates a ripple effect of positivity that directly benefits the youth we serve.

The Power of Collective Impact

When we come together as a group, our impact on the youth in Park Rapids is magnified. It’s about more than just one-on-one time; it’s about a collective commitment to the well-being of our community’s future.

Think of it this way: a single mentor can change a child’s life. But a community of mentors, supporting each other and sharing their collective wisdom, can change the entire trajectory of a community. By fostering a culture of support among our mentors, we are building a stronger, more resilient foundation for the youth in our program.

Studies have shown that youth who have quality mentoring relationships are more likely to:

Succeed academically: They have better attendance and higher graduation rates.

Make healthier choices: They are less likely to engage in risky behaviors.

Develop greater self-esteem: They have a more positive outlook on their future.

These outcomes aren’t just statistics; they are the real-world results of the dedication and love our mentors pour into their “Kinship kids.” And that work is made possible because our mentors have each other’s backs.

Sharing More Than Just Time

At our dinner at Necce’s, the conversation flowed from funny anecdotes about recent outings to heartfelt discussions about the dreams our mentees have for their futures. We celebrated successes and offered encouragement for the hurdles yet to be cleared. This is the heart of Kinship. We aren’t just a list of names on a roster; we are friends, confidants, and a source of inspiration for one another.

If you’ve been considering becoming a mentor but have been hesitant, wondering if you have what it takes or if you’ll be on your own, let this be your reassurance. When you join Kinship of the Park Rapids Area, you aren’t just signing up for a volunteer role; you’re being welcomed into a family. You’ll have a built-in support system of people who understand the journey and are eager to walk alongside you.

Your Seat at the Table is Waiting

We are always looking for more people to join our Kinship family. Whether you have a few hours a month or a few hours a week, you have something valuable to offer a young person in our community. And in return, you’ll gain a community of fellow mentors who will support you every step of the way.

The impact we can have when we all come together is truly limitless. We invite you to take the first step and learn more about how you can become a Kinship mentor.

Ready to join the family?

Visit our website to see the simple steps to becoming a mentor: https://kinshipparkrapids.org/get-involved/steps-to-become-a-kinship-mentor/

Come be a part of something bigger than yourself. Help us build a brighter future for Park Rapids, one relationship at a time. We can’t wait to welcome you to the table.
